“Without and Within”
introducing Theravada Buddhism
“without and within” is a new book introducing Theravada Buddhism, being published especially for visitors to Thailand, to be provided in hotel rooms nationwide.
This special publication is being presented in triple celebration of the 2,600th anniversary of the Buddha’s Enlightenment; the 100th anniversary of the birthday of the late Supreme Patriarch, His Holiness Somdet Phra Nyanasamvara; and the 84th anniversary of the birthday of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
Thailand is widely known to be one of the world's most important centers for the practice and teaching of Theravada Buddhism. As such, it is fitting for any and all visitors here to be able to easily learn about the basic principles of Buddhism by having ready access in their hotel rooms to an introductory book about it, just as copies of the Bible, and a Japanese-published volume titled The Buddha, are already available this way.
Thus, the organizers of the publication have joined efforts, with the following in mind:
1. All visitors to Thailand can gain a basic understanding of Theravada Buddhism by means of an elegantly presented and inspiring volume conveniently provided in hotel guest rooms.
2. Thailand has long served as a world center for Buddhists and Buddhism. The book will not only provide an easily understandable introduction to Buddhism for international visitors, but will also let Thai readers review and appreciate the principles of Buddhism.
3. The publication project can thereby help disseminate and promote Buddhism widely throughout diverse groups in society on a continuous basis, both among devoted Buddhists and involved sectors.
The Buddhadasa Indapanno Archives Foundation, with the generous support of the Royal Crown Property Bureau and the Ministry of Culture, and with the kindness of the Venerable Ajahn Jayasaro Bhikkhu, together with a network of other supporters, has undertaken this project beginning in 2012 as follows:
“without and within : Questions and Answers on the Teachings of Theravada Buddhism” has been prepared thanks to the kind efforts and guidance of a British monk, the Venerable Ajahn Jayasaro Bhikkhu, a former abbot of Wat Pah Nanachat, a forest monastery for international devotees. He studied and practiced Buddhism with the Venerable Ajahn Chah, of Wat Nong Pah Pong in Warin Chamrab District, Ubon Ratchathani Province, which has over 300 branches throughout the world, promoting Buddhism both in Thailand and abroad since 1978.
1.1 The book presents 125 questions and answers explaining Buddhism to anyone interested to learn. The topics include the Buddha; Dhamma (Buddhist principles); Sangha (the clergy); the Buddhist perspective or worldview; Buddhism in Thailand; the path of practice; and resources for studying Buddhism. The text is concise, drawing on the words of the Buddha and such notable Thai monks as Ajahn Thet Desarangsi, Ajahn Lee Dhammadharo, Buddhadasa Bhikkhu, His Holiness Somdet Phra Nyanasamvara, Ajahn Maha Bua Nyanasampanno, Ajahn Chah Subaddho, Somdet Phra Buddhacarya (Kiaw Uppaseno), Phra Bhramagunabhorn (P. A. Payutto), Ajahn Sumedho and Nun Kaew Siang Lam.
1.2 The book is presented in an appealing, convenient format. Its size is 7 x 8.5 inches. Printed on 120-gramme green offset paper in two colours, it has 252 pages, in a durable flexi-bound binding. The cover is printed on 260-gramme paper in a special colour and laminated in plastic. The title is printed in gold-coloured ink. The questions and answers are thoughtfully arranged and ordered, each pair presented within two pages. Illustrations enrich the volume with meaningful visual content. Entries may be read at random.
2. Co-Sponsors and Publishing
2.1 For the first printing, the organizers have invited interested parties from the government, the private sector, local communities, foundations and other groups, such as hotel associations, accommodation operators, municipal governments, and local administrative organizations. The first printing will include 10 bulk sets of 8,400 books each, for a total of 84,000 books. This number matches that of the “84,000 dhammakkhandha”, the number of the Buddha's teachings according to Theravada tradition. The number also honors the 84th birthday anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Future print runs will be added as deemed appropriate.
2.2 Thus far, 13 bulk sets, or a total of 109,200 books, have been ordered: Two each by the Crown Property Bureau, Siam Cement Group, Siam Commercial Bank; and one each by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism Authority of Thailand, Kiatnakin Phatra Financial Group, Amarin Printing and Publishing PCL; as well as three bulk sets by the Thai Health Promotion Foundation.
2.3 Amarin Printing and Publishing PCL will be responsible for special publishing with logos.
2.4 By the kind permission of the Venerable Ajahn Jayasaro Bhikkhu, the general public will also be allowed to place additional printing orders of the book to increase the reach of the book.
3. Management and Distribution
3.1 A joint-committee, chaired by Dr. Sanoh Unakul, has been formed to handle this project in the long-term. Committee members comprise those from all involved sectors, including representatives from the Panyaprateep Foundation, while the Buddhadasa Indapanno Archives Foundation will serve as secretary.
3.2 To fulfill objectives of the project and the intention of sponsors and all parties involved, distribution will be offered free of charge to hotels and other accommodations to the fullest extent possible. (According to the most recent statistic, Thailand has approximately 450,000 hotel rooms.)
